- Population origin: The Temne and Mende are about a third of the population. Other important groups are Lokken, Sherbo, Limba, sussus, fulahs,Konos and Krios. These are the descendants of freed African slaves in the nineteenth century who settled in Freetown (Krio is a corruption of the word Creole). There are small groups of Europeans, Arabs, Chinese and Indians.
